Kansas City Chiefs promote fullback Ben VanSumeren to active roster

The Kansas City Chiefs have made several roster adjustments, most notably promoting fullback Ben VanSumeren to the active roster. VanSumeren, a former linebacker prospect from Michigan State, takes over following the decision to place linebacker Cooper McDonald on the Reserve/Injured list, which will sideline McDonald for at least four games.

Special teams coordinator Dave Toub noted that VanSumeren’s background as a linebacker makes him a versatile ‘four-phase guy’ who can contribute significantly to special teams and offense. VanSumeren previously spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills before joining the Chiefs' practice squad.

In addition to the promotion, the Chiefs signed defensive end Michael Heldman and cornerback Melvin Smith to the practice squad, while releasing safety Tanner McCalister.
