Kansas City Mexican restaurants El Pollo Rey and El Indio gain recognition

Kansas City's Mexican culinary scene features several highly regarded establishments, most notably El Pollo Rey. Located in the Argentine neighborhood, El Pollo Rey has gained national recognition for its focused menu centered on wood-fired, mesquite-grilled chicken and tacos al carbón.

In Northeast Kansas City, El Indio and KC Tacos & Wings serve as prominent local alternatives. Owned by Juan Bautista, who launched El Indio in 2015, the business has evolved from a mobile kitchen to a brick-and-mortar presence at 5200 Independence Avenue. Following the acquisition of a former taco building, Bautista rebranded the storefront as KC Tacos and Wings, creating a dual operation that continues to serve Latin-inspired, open-flame grilled specialties.
