Kansas City Royals place rookie pitcher Luinder Avila on 15‑day injured list

Kansas City right‑hander Luinder Avila was placed on the Royals’ 15‑day injured list because of right forearm tightness. The 25‑year‑old started Saturday’s game against the Colorado Rockies, retired the first six batters, then slipped while pitching to Willi Castro and allowed six runs in 2 2/3 innings. He remained in the game but felt soreness in his forearm and will undergo medical testing on Monday, according to manager Matt Quatraro.

Avila entered the season with a 5‑4 record, a 5.53 ERA, 42 walks and 61 strikeouts over 70 innings. In a related move, the Royals selected left‑hander Aaron Bummer from Triple‑A Omaha to add depth to the staff. Bummer, 32, previously pitched for the Chicago White Sox and Atlanta Braves.
