Kansas City Royals release outfielder Starling Marte

The Kansas City Royals have released veteran Dominican outfielder Starling Marte. The decision follows his designation for assignment on Monday and comes after he cleared waivers.

Marte, 37, struggled during the 2026 season, recording a .242/.298/.314 slash line across 59 games. His performance showed a significant decline in power and speed, with his sprint speed ranking in the 11th percentile, the lowest of his career. He primarily served as a part-time player, often utilized against left-handed pitching.

The Royals remain responsible for the remaining portion of his $1 million contract. If Marte signs with a new club, that team will only be responsible for the prorated league minimum for the time he spends on their roster.
