Ty Masterson Wins Kansas Republican Primary for 2026 Governor Race

Republican State Senate President Ty Masterson secured the Kansas Republican nomination for governor in the Aug. 4, 2026 primary, defeating a crowded field that included Scott Schwab, Charlotte O’Hara, Nick Reinecker, Stacy Rogers, Philip Sarnecki and Vicki Schmidt. Masterson ran with the endorsement of former President Donald J. Trump, positioning him as the party’s favorite to flip the open governorship.

The open seat results from Democratic Governor Laura Kelly being term‑limited after two terms. In the Democratic primary, state Senator Cindy Holscher emerged as the nominee, beating fellow state Senator Ethan Corson. Voters also decided on a constitutional amendment that would replace the current appointment system for Kansas Supreme Court justices with elected six‑year terms.

Kansas, one of five states with a Democratic‑held governorship in 2026 and the only one Trump carried in 2024, is seen as a key pickup opportunity for Republicans heading into the midterm elections.
