Kansas man arrested for threatening to assassinate Donald Trump

Jaden J. Read, a 24-year-old resident of Clearwater, Kansas, has been arrested and faces federal charges for posting death threats against U.S. President Donald Trump on social media.

The investigation began following an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers on October 15, which led authorities to several Facebook comments made by Read in response to news articles regarding Trump’s upcoming campaign visit to Wichita. In his posts, Read allegedly expressed a desire to shoot the president, claimed to have acquired .308 and .305 caliber ammunition, and stated he had “mapped out roofs” near the intended speech location.

Federal authorities, including the U.S. Secret Service and the U.S. Marshals Service, participated in the arrest. U.S. Attorney Ryan A. Kriegshauser stated that political violence and threats will not be tolerated, noting that while the First Amendment protects robust disagreement, it does not protect such threats. Read remains in federal custody pending a detention hearing.
