Kanye West concerts in Saint Petersburg face uncertainty after venue denial

The planned concerts of American rapper Kanye West, also known as Ye, in Saint Petersburg have come under scrutiny after the Gazprom Arena announced it has no official contract to host the events scheduled for October 10 and 11.

While the Moscow-based Say Agency had already begun selling tickets—with some prices reaching nearly $2,000—the stadium management stated that no lease agreement has been signed, making the performances impossible at their venue. The situation has caused confusion among fans who had already purchased tickets.

The potential visit has sparked debate within Russia. Some officials viewed the concerts as a way to counter perceptions of international isolation following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. However, others have raised concerns regarding West’s past antisemitic remarks and associations with Nazi imagery, a sensitive topic given Saint Petersburg’s history during World War II.

Reports suggest the cancellation may be linked to pressure from Russian authorities. Ekaterina Mizulina, head of the Safe Internet League, has publicly criticized the artist, while other media outlets have indicated that the fate of the shows may be under discussion at the Kremlin level.
