Kaohsiung Blood Center warns of critical blood shortage in southern Taiwan
The Kaohsiung Blood Center has issued an urgent appeal for blood donations as medical supplies in southern Taiwan have reached critical levels. Current blood stocks for the region have fallen to just 3.7 days.
Specific shortages are acute for certain blood types: Type A and AB stocks are at approximately 3 days, while Type O stocks have dropped below the 3-day mark. The decline in donations is attributed to heavy rainfall caused by a low-pressure zone and southwest monsoon, which has resulted in flooding, transportation obstacles, and reduced public mobility.
Medical facilities in the southern regions, including Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and Penei, require approximately 1,900 bags of blood daily for surgeries, emergency services, and maternity care. The center is urging healthy individuals aged 17 and older to visit donation centers or mobile blood drives as weather conditions improve.
