Taiwan prosecutors investigate multiple election bribery cases

Prosecutors across Taiwan have launched several investigations into alleged election bribery and corruption involving local officials and candidates.

In Keelung, candidate Li Yun-jing, her spouse, and her father-in-law are accused of bribing voters with banquets and daily necessities. The father-in-law was ordered to be detained incommunicado, while the spouse was released on bail.

In Kaohsiung, City Councilor Chen Shan-hui was released on 2.5 million TWD bail following allegations of accepting bribes from green energy companies. This investigation is an extension of a case involving fellow Councilor Chen Ming-ze, who is accused of using his position to extort interests from solar power operators.

Other regional investigations include: • Yilan: Candidates for township chief and town representative are accused of bribing voters with banquets and seafood. • Taoyuan: A candidate is accused of using community resources and event sponsorships to influence voters. • Hsinchu: A substitute candidate and an associate were detained for allegedly offering 1,000 TWD per vote. • Tainan: A candidate is reportedly under investigation for organizing low-cost travel tours to China to influence voters.
