Kaohsiung expands Enterovirus 71 vaccine subsidies

Kaohsiung City has expanded its subsidy program for Enterovirus 71 (EV71) vaccinations to include children from middle-to-low-income families. Previously, the full subsidy was limited to children from low-income households and those in foster care or residential institutions.

The expansion aims to reduce the economic burden on vulnerable families and lower the risk of severe complications, such as encephalitis and cardiopulmonary failure, which are particularly high in children under five. The subsidy covers two to three doses of approved vaccines, including brands from companies such as Kugene and Medigen, for children aged two months to two years residing in Kaohsiung.

As of September 30, the city had already provided 319 doses under the previous policy. The expanded program is expected to benefit approximately 370 additional infants and toddlers. Eligible families can receive vaccinations at designated contract medical institutions through December 20, or until funds are exhausted.
