Kaohsiung police arrest drunk driver after high-risk pursuit

Police in Kaohsiung apprehended a 23-year-old man, surnamed Li, after a high-risk pursuit involving a vehicle that had been left idling on a road. Officers from the Caoya Police Station discovered the driver asleep at the wheel of a white sedan during the early hours of October 2.

When officers attempted to conduct an inspection, the driver woke up and fled, leading police on a two-kilometer chase. Officers maintained a steady distance to ensure public safety before successfully intercepting the vehicle at the intersection of Zhongshan and Guanghua Roads.

Investigations revealed that Li had been drinking with friends the previous night and was driving without a valid license. A breathalyzer test confirmed he was over the legal alcohol limit. He faces charges of public danger under the Criminal Code, as well as multiple traffic violations including unlicensed driving, driving under the influence, and refusing a police inspection. Total potential fines for these offenses could reach NT$210,000.
