Kaohsiung Social Education Center Hosts Hands‑On Science Toy Workshop for Families

On August 1, the Kaohsiung City Social Education Center organized a family‑focused science activity titled “Hands‑On Science Toys.” More than a hundred parents and children participated. The event was led by adjunct professor Zhou Jian‑he of the Department of Physics at National Kaohsiung Normal University and the ADET Lab team.

Participants used everyday recycled items such as CD discs, chopsticks and film canisters to create traditional toys—including a “ling‑long drum,” a bamboo‑cicada, and an LED projector. While assembling the drum, families explored concepts of centrifugal force and light diffraction; the bamboo‑cicada demonstrated acoustic resonance; and the LED projector illustrated optics, batteries and lenses. The hands‑on approach aimed to improve children’s observation, manipulation skills and scientific literacy, while allowing parents to engage directly in learning.

The center highlighted that simple play can convey rich physics principles, encouraging continued curiosity about everyday science.
