Kapil Sibal criticizes detentions of protesters in Delhi
Senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal has criticized the detention of protesters at Jantar Mantar who were demonstrating for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. During a press conference in Delhi, Sibal questioned the legality of invoking Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to restrict peaceful demonstrations, suggesting the measures are intended to protect the administration rather than public safety.
Sibal alleged that protesters are being arrested and taken to undisclosed locations without informing their families. He further claimed that individuals are being detained in various states, including Karnataka and West Bengal, to prevent them from reaching the capital. Highlighting the heavy security presence, Sibal questioned the necessity of deploying 28 battalions and Central Armed Police Forces to manage a peaceful protest, stating that the government appears to feel threatened by the public gathering.
