Kapitan Andreevo border crossing begins major reconstruction

A large-scale reconstruction project has commenced at the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing in Bulgaria, aimed at increasing the facility's capacity by 25%. The project seeks to optimize existing routes and modernize infrastructure to handle the high volume of traffic, which includes over 1 million freight vehicles annually.

The modernization includes expanding lanes for both heavy goods vehicles and passenger cars. For incoming freight, Border Police lanes will increase from three to seven, while outgoing Customs Agency stations will grow from six to eight. Passenger traffic lanes will expand from ten to fifteen, with five lanes designed to be reversible to manage fluctuating demand.

Additional infrastructure improvements include new canopies for customs inspections, new X-ray frames, automated passenger registration paths, and disinfection facilities. The project also features a specialized zone for live animals, new storage areas for detained goods, and a photovoltaic system intended to provide half of the border crossing's energy needs. Construction is being carried out by Glavbolgarstroy in three stages, with a planned duration of up to 365 days, though officials aim for an earlier completion. Traffic flow will not be interrupted during the construction process.
