Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority lawsuit heads to 10th Circuit Court

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit in Denver is set to hear opening arguments regarding a lawsuit involving the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and the University of Wyoming. The case stems from a 2023 lawsuit filed by several members of the sorority against the national organization, its building company, and Artemis Langford, the first openly transgender woman to join the university's chapter.

The plaintiffs sought declaratory and injunctive relief, as well as monetary damages, following Langford's admission into the women-only nonprofit. A previous ruling by U.S. District Judge Alan B. Johnson dismissed the initial motion, stating that the sorority's decision to admit a transgender woman was protected under the First Amendment's right to freedom of expressive association. The court noted that the organization's definition of a woman had remained unchanged since 2018.
