Kaptai Lake authorities reopen 16 spillway gates

Authorities have reopened 16 spillway gates at Kaptai Lake to manage rising water levels caused by upstream mountain surges. On Friday, September 11, each gate was opened by 6 inches to discharge water into the Karnaphuli River, resulting in a discharge rate of approximately 9,000 cubic feet per second.

The current water level of the lake is recorded at 105.51 feet MSL (Mean Sea Level), while the maximum capacity is 109 feet MSL. This action serves as a precautionary measure to mitigate the risk of flooding and erosion in various areas of the Rangamati district.

Management at the Kaptai Karnaphuli Hydroelectric Power Station stated that the gates will remain open until the water level recedes to 105 feet. This marks the third time this season that the gates have been opened to control the reservoir levels.
