Kapuas Regency faces severe forest fires and drought

In Kapuas Regency, Central Kalimantan, forest and land fires (karhutla) and drought conditions continue to pose a serious threat. As of August 30, 2026, authorities recorded 14,517 hotspots and 173 fire incidents, covering a total area of 1,002.92 hectares. The Mantangai district reported the highest concentration with 8,173 hotspots.

Local government officials, led by Regent HM Wiyatno, held coordination meetings to discuss disaster status and mitigation strategies. Response efforts have included 121 ground extinguishings and three aerial water bombings.

Adding to the crisis, low rainfall predictions from BMKG for September 2026 have heightened drought concerns. This has led to water scarcity and saltwater intrusion in the Kapuas Murung River, forcing the local water utility (Perumdam Kapuas) to implement a rotational supply system and utilize water tankers to reach affected residents.
