Kara launches major water supply project in Togo

The Togolese government has officially launched a major drinking water supply project in Kara and surrounding areas, aimed at benefiting approximately 200,000 people across 40,000 households. The initiative, inaugurated on September 28, 2026, by the Minister Delegate for Water and Sanitation, Séna Alipui, seeks to increase water access from one in four families to three in four.

The project involves significant infrastructure investments totaling over 13 billion CFA francs. The first phase, awarded to China Geo-Engineering Corporation for 8.6 billion CFA francs (excluding taxes), includes a water intake on the Sara River with a capacity of 500 m³ per hour, an 8.3-kilometer raw water pipeline, and a new treatment station capable of processing 10,000 m³ per day. Other components include the rehabilitation of the Bafilo station and the installation of domestic connections and public standpipes.

A second phase, awarded to ASI BF for 3.57 billion CFA francs, focuses on constructing a 5,000 m³ reservoir in Kara Sud. Additional funding from the Islamic Development Bank will support water retention measures to combat severe low-water periods, the installation of 1,300 connection kits, and the rehabilitation of 25 kilometers of pipelines. The project is financed by the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development and the Islamic Development Bank.
