Kara Wai reveals she declined wealthy marriage to care for disabled sister
Hong Kong actress and Golden Horse Award winner Kara Wai recently revealed personal family secrets during an interview on the program ‘Beyond the Heat’. Wai disclosed that she once had the opportunity to marry into a wealthy family but chose to decline the marriage due to her responsibilities toward her elder sister.
Wai recounted a childhood house fire in which her sister rescued her and her younger sibling, resulting in the sister suffering permanent blindness and facial disfigurement. To protect her sister’s privacy and dignity, the family kept the incident secret and rarely hosted guests. Wai expressed that she feared a wealthy partner or their family might reject her because of her sister’s condition, and she stated, “I am unwilling to abandon my family for anyone.”
After decades of carrying this emotional burden, which she described as a “rope binding her,” the 66-year-old actress decided to speak openly about her sister to help ease the psychological pressure. She expressed hope that her sister, who is nearly 80, can move past her social withdrawal and enjoy her achievements.
