Karabük University researchers develop new biomaterial for milk teeth

Academics at Karabük University (KBÜ) have launched a project to develop a new generation of biocompatible biomaterials designed to protect primary (milk) teeth. Supported by the Turkish Institutes of Health (TÜSEB), the research aims to create a filling material for root canal treatments that features enhanced antibacterial properties to combat microorganisms causing infections.

The project is led by Associate Professor Taibe Tokgöz Kaplan from the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Associate Professor Olcay Özdemir from the Department of Endodontics. The primary goal is to prevent the premature loss of milk teeth due to decay or trauma, ensuring they remain healthy in the mouth until their natural exfoliation time.

By addressing the disadvantages of current materials, the researchers hope to develop a prototype that is more biologically compatible and does not harm the permanent teeth developing beneath the primary teeth. The initiative also aims to contribute a domestic and national product to the field of dental health technologies.
