Karabük University study finds cognitive exercises benefit Type 2 diabetes patients
Researchers at Karabük University have completed a TÜBİTAK-supported study investigating the impact of cognitive exercises on elderly individuals living with Type 2 diabetes. The project, conducted at the Karabük Training and Research Hospital, utilized a group of participants divided into a single-task training group, a dual-task training group incorporating cognitive exercises, and a control group.
Over an eight-week period, participants performed aerobic, strengthening, and balance exercises three times a week. The dual-task group was specifically required to engage attention, memory, and thinking skills during physical activity.
Findings indicated that the group performing cognitive exercises alongside physical activity showed significant improvements in HbA1c levels (average blood sugar over three months) compared to the control group. Additionally, these participants showed increased BDNF levels, which are associated with learning and memory processes. The study also noted improvements in cognitive functions, including attention, planning, and reaction times, as well as a reduction in the time required to fall asleep. Both exercise groups demonstrated enhanced physical capabilities, such as improved walking capacity, grip strength, and balance.
