Karaburun fishermen preserve traditional fishing methods
In the Karaburun district, fishermen are preserving the traditional ‘çökertme dalyan’ fishing method. This technique involves setting nets across fish migration routes and monitoring them from lookout huts. Fishermen wait for hours to detect movement, pulling ropes to trap fish schools within the nets before collecting them using small boats.
This ancestral practice, passed down through generations, is currently limited to specific seasons when mullet are abundant. Local fishermen note that the method requires extreme patience and does not utilize modern radar or bait systems. According to the Tepeboz Fisheries Cooperative, there are approximately 25 such fishing sites in the peninsula and two in Foça, making it a unique regional tradition.
