Turkey agriculture: Record fruit exports and pepper price crisis
Turkish agricultural sectors are experiencing contrasting developments. In the Karacabey Plain, kapya pepper producers are facing economic hardship, alleging that processing factories are delaying purchases to artificially drive down prices. While fresh market prices initially reached 25-30 lira per kilogram, they have dropped to approximately 18 lira, nearing the production cost of 15-17 lira. Producers have called for government intervention to ensure sustainable farming.
In Kahramanmaraş, the harvest of red peppers for paste production has begun, with prices currently ranging between 25 and 30 lira per kilogram. Local producers emphasize the high quality of the regional crop despite high input costs.
On a broader scale, Turkey’s fresh fruit exports have reached a historic milestone, surpassing 1 billion dollars in the first seven months of 2026. This represents a 59 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Germany remains the largest market, with exports increasing by 80 percent. Significant growth was also recorded in Spain, Poland, and Italy, driven by high demand for products such as cherries, peaches, and apricots.
