Karacadağ rice producers face rising costs and low profits

Rice producers in the Karacadağ region of Diyarbakır are facing severe financial difficulties due to rising production costs. During a visit to Karaburçak village in the Ergani district, Saadet Party Diyarbakır Provincial Chairman Abdurrahman Ergin met with farmers struggling with high input expenses.

Producers reported that the costs for electricity, diesel, seeds, and labor are increasing annually, while they are unable to sell their products at sustainable prices. A critical issue is the high cost of irrigation; because rice production is water-intensive, farmers must pump water from deep wells reaching depths of 215 to 250 meters. One producer noted that electricity bills from DEDAŞ have reached millions of liras, significantly eroding their profit margins.
