Karachi court sentences police officer to death in staged encounter case

A Model Criminal Court in Karachi has sentenced a Shaheen Force police officer, identified as Shehryar, to death for the 2022 murder of 26-year-old Amir Husain. Two other police personnel, Nasir and Faisal, received life imprisonment sentences for their involvement in the incident.

The court also ordered all three convicts to pay 500,000 rupees each in compensation to the victim’s family, totaling 1.5 million rupees.

The incident occurred on December 27, 2022, in the Gulistan-e-Jauhar area. According to prosecution details, police personnel signaled Husain to stop during snap-checking near Aladdin Park. When he did not stop, officers pursued him into a residential apartment complex. Husain, who was reportedly on his way to purchase medicine for his paralyzed father, was shot and killed inside the premises. While police initially characterized the event as a legitimate encounter, the court found the killing to be a staged incident.
