Karachi faces increased nighttime power outages and record water revenue
K-Electric has implemented additional nighttime load shedding across various areas of Karachi. The utility provider stated that the increased duration of 2 to 3 hours is targeted at regions with high electricity theft and significant losses. Affected areas include New Karachi, Shah Nawaz Bhutto Colony, Manghopir, Lyari, Pak Colony, Jacob Lines, Lasbela, Isa Nigri, and Orangi Town, among others. While K-Electric maintains the measures are due to theft, residents in areas previously designated as load shedding-free have also reported power outages.
Separately, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation reported record-breaking revenue collections for September 2026, totaling 2.74 billion rupees. This marks the highest monthly collection in the institution's history. Total collections for the first quarter of the 2026-27 fiscal year have reached 7.58 billion rupees. Officials attributed this growth to improved recovery strategies for defaulters, better engagement with industrial and government consumers, and the deployment of specialized teams to expedite the recovery process.
