Karachi faces safety and governance concerns following mayor's office fire

A recent fire at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation building, which damaged the office of Mayor Murtaza Wahab, has intensified scrutiny of urban safety and governance in Karachi. The blaze, suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit in an air conditioner, spread rapidly due to wooden furniture and false ceilings. Officials noted that electrical short circuits account for approximately 80 to 90 percent of fires in the city.

Separately, experts at the ICON 2026 conference warned that Karachi’s fragmented administration and unregulated urban expansion are undermining climate resilience and worsening public health. Speakers highlighted that the city’s management is divided among 26 different agencies, hindering coordinated responses to environmental crises. This lack of infrastructure and planning has been linked to rising health risks, including sewage contamination and disease outbreaks.
