Karachi University students petition court to revive student union
Students at Karachi University have filed a petition in the Sindh High Court (SHC) seeking the revival of the institution's student union. The petition, filed by students from the university’s School of Law, names several officials as parties, including the chief secretary, secretary of universities and boards, secretary of colleges, secretary of law, the vice chancellor, and the registrar.
The petitioners argue that although the Sindh Students Union Act 2019 was passed unanimously by the assembly in February 2022, the necessary rules and regulations have yet to be formulated. They are requesting that the court instruct the Sindh government to finalize these rules and issue a formal notification of the law.
Additionally, the petition seeks a directive for the university administration to establish an election commission and conduct elections for the student union. The law aims to enhance student education through participation in social, cultural, and campus governance activities.
