Karaman student dormitories face gender segregation proposals

An inspection of student dormitories in Karaman, conducted as part of the ‘2026 Major Repair Planning’, has led to proposals to convert mixed-gender dormitories into single-gender facilities. The report, which cites the Presidential Circular on Savings Measures, argues that designating dormitories as either exclusively for girls or exclusively for boys is the most economical and applicable solution.

The inspection identified fire safety risks in several locations, including the Merkez TOKİ Anadolu Lisesi and Merkez Necip Fazıl Kısakürek Sosyal Bilimler Anadolu Lisesi dormitories. Officials noted that using a single fire escape system for both male and female students in divided buildings poses an additional evacuation risk. Consequently, the report suggests reassigning students to different facilities to ensure safety and efficient use of public resources.

The Eğitim-İş Union has reacted strongly to these findings, claiming that the fire safety justifications are being used as a pretext to target and erode co-education.
