Karaula film reunites former Yugoslav talent
Director Rajko Grlić’s film *Karaula* adapts Ante Tomić’s 2006 novel *Ništa nas ne sme iznenaditi* to portray life in a small Yugoslav army outpost on the Albanian border in 1987. The production brought together actors from across the former Yugoslavia, including Emir Hadžihafizbegović as the ailing Lieutenant Safet Pašić, Verica Nedeska as Mirjana, and Toni Gojanović as the doctor Siniša Siriščević.
Shot amid the scenery of Ohrid Lake and the Galičica mountain in present‑day North Macedonia, the movie blends dark humor with a nostalgic look at the fractured ties of the former federation. Grlić emphasizes that the story is about ordinary people rather than grand history, allowing viewers unfamiliar with the region to connect with its characters.
