Karawang implements drought mitigation to meet rice production targets
Authorities in Karawang are implementing various strategies to maintain rice production targets despite the threats posed by the dry season and drought. The Karawang Agriculture and Food Security Office (DPKPP) aims to reach a production target of 1.41 million tons of harvested dry grain (GKP) by the end of the year, having already recorded 955,951 tons through August.
To achieve this, the DPKPP is utilizing modern agricultural techniques, such as the ‘Tabela’ (direct seeding) method, which reduces planting time but requires higher seed density. Additionally, the Ministry of Public Works, through the Citarum River Basin Organization (BBWS Citarum), has deployed ten pumps to irrigate approximately 300 hectares of rice fields in Sindangsari Village, Kutawaluya. This pumping effort is supported by the construction of ditch dams and the maintenance of irrigation networks, including the normalization of the Sasak secondary channel, to ensure consistent water distribution to local farmers.
