Karawang residents and officials clean up crude oil spill in Cibuaya

Residents, village officials, and local government authorities in Karawang, West Java, have launched a cleanup operation to remove crude oil spills affecting the Tanjungpakis waters in Cibuaya District. The spill has contaminated the coastlines of Sedari and Cemarajaya villages, impacting local fishermen by damaging nets and making them difficult to clean.

Following instructions from Karawang Regent Aep Syaepuloh, the cleanup involves cooperation between local communities, village apparatus, and PT Pertamina Hulu Energi Offshore North West Java (PHE ONWJ). The Karawang Environmental Agency (DLH) has deployed 32 personnel to assist in the efforts. Collected waste is being temporarily stored at the Cemarajaya Village Office before being transported by a competent third party.

To determine the exact source of the pollution, the Karawang Regency Government has sent samples to the Indonesian National Police Forensic Laboratory (Puslabfor Mabes Polri) and Sucofindo for testing. Cleanup workers are utilizing protective equipment, including masks and gloves, to ensure safety during the process, which is estimated to take approximately two days.
