Kardinal Offishall reflects on career struggles and new album

Toronto rapper Kardinal Offishall is releasing a long-awaited sequel to his breakthrough work, titled ‘Firestarter Vol. 2: Everyday, Sometimes…’. The new project marks a shift from his earlier high-energy style toward more candid reflections on grief, relationships, and his life as a 50-year-old family man.

Offishall detailed the professional and financial hardships he faced following the success of his 2001 album, ‘Quest for Fire: Firestarter, Vol. 1’. He noted that industry shifts, including the absorption of his label MCA Records by Geffen, led to stalled collaborations and attempts by executives to change his musical identity. These challenges resulted in periods of financial instability and difficult touring conditions, including sleeping on tour buses.

A turning point occurred during a tour with Akon and Gwen Stefani, when he recorded the hit ‘Dangerous’ on the final night of the tour, revitalizing his career.
