Kardzhali celebrates 114 years since liberation
The city of Kardzhali marked the 114th anniversary of its liberation on October 21. The celebrations included wreath-laying ceremonies at the monument of General Vasil Delov, who led the Haskovo detachment during the Balkan War. The festivities featured a parade with local educational institutions, a school guard, and a fanfare orchestra.
During the official ceremony at the Monument of the Liberators, Mayor Erol Myumun addressed the community, emphasizing unity and progress. He highlighted recent municipal achievements, including street renovations, energy efficiency improvements in public and residential buildings funded by European and municipal resources, and the construction of a shelter for stray dogs near Sedlovina village.
Historically, the liberation occurred in 1912 when Bulgarian forces, commanded by Colonel Vasil Delov, defeated the Ottoman corps of Yaver Pasha. Despite being outnumbered, the Bulgarian detachment secured the city between October 5 and 8 (old style), an event that remains a central part of the city's identity and official holiday.
