Kardzhali Mayor Erol Myumun taken for questioning by police

Erol Myumun, the Mayor of Kardzhali and a deputy leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) party, was taken from his office by police for questioning. Authorities conducted a search of his residence, though Myumun stated that nothing was found during the process.

The investigation stems from a 2024 report filed by a former municipal employee, Monika Atanasova, who alleged she was pressured to resign from her position. Myumun noted that the employee had previously lost legal battles regarding her dismissal. This follows a similar incident involving the deputy mayor and municipal secretary of Kardzhali several weeks ago.

The police action has sparked significant political tension. DPS officials, including Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Ayten Sabri, have characterized the investigation as political repression and selective targeting of DPS-affiliated mayors. This follows recent police operations involving the mayors of Belitsa and Sungurlare. Prime Minister Rumen Radev has rejected claims of political bias, stating that institutions are acting based on corruption reports and legal procedures.
