Karen Bass denies responsibility for Los Angeles road conditions

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has denied responsibility for the city’s deteriorating street infrastructure, stating that the crumbling roads and sidewalks are issues that have existed for approximately three decades. During an interview with REAL 92.3, Bass remarked, “those potholes did not come, and those sidewalks did not break because I’m mayor,” adding, “I promise I didn’t break those sidewalks.”

While distancing herself from the cause of the damage, Bass acknowledged that the task of repairing the infrastructure falls to her administration. She noted that city crews have filled “over 20,000” potholes following recent rainfall.

The mayor’s comments have drawn significant criticism from political activists and public figures on social media. Critics, including actress Justine Bateman and activist April Silverman, have accused Bass of failing to take accountability for the city's conditions as she prepares for a reelection campaign against Councilwoman Nithya Raman.
