Karepovac landfill dispute blocks Omiš waste trucks

A dispute has erupted at the Karepovac landfill in Split after trucks from the Omiš municipal company, Peovica, were blocked from entering the facility. The refusal comes as Split implements a policy to prioritize its own waste due to limited landfill capacity, effectively ending agreements with neighboring municipalities.

Drivers from Peovica, who were transporting burnt waste from recent fires in the Omiš area, were reportedly denied entry and issued fines by traffic wardens. Local officials, including Most politician Milan Perišić, criticized the move, arguing that an agreement existed to extend waste disposal for fire remediation efforts. Split Mayor Tomislav Šuta maintained that neighboring municipalities must find alternative solutions, noting that the landfill is nearing its capacity.

Split-Dalmatia County Prefect Blaženko Boban described the incident as a result of a bureaucratic misunderstanding and noted that Split has granted Omiš a deadline extension until September 1. Meanwhile, officials are preparing to declare a natural disaster in the Omiš region following the fires, with damage estimates exceeding 100 million euros.
