Kariane Kong reflects on career struggles and mental health
Hong Kong actress Kariane Kong recently shared reflections on her thirty-year career during an appearance on the online program ‘Chi Chat’. She discussed her transition from modeling to television acting and addressed the significant mental health challenges she faced due to intense cyberbullying.
Kong revealed that approximately ten years ago, following her roles in ‘Glamour and Greed’ and ‘Triumph in the Skies II’, she suffered an emotional breakdown caused by severe online criticism regarding her character portrayals. This period of distress required professional psychiatric assistance. She noted that while she once struggled with the negativity, her reputation has since seen a positive shift, with fans revisiting her past performances with praise.
Regarding upcoming projects, Kong announced she will take on a challenging role in the new TVB drama ‘City of Splendour’. She will portray a complex character, Ding Lai-ming, who has been confined to a psychiatric hospital for thirty years. Kong described the role as requiring her to navigate three distinct mental states: genuine insanity, being healthy, and feigning mental illness.
