Karima Ghaith defends folk lyrics following Tetouan festival controversy

Moroccan singer Karima Ghaith has sparked significant social media debate following her performance at the Women's Voices Festival in Tetouan. The controversy centers on the lyrics of a folk song she performed, specifically the phrase ‘اللهم الزهو ولا زواج القهرة’ (May there be joy rather than a marriage of oppression).

Issac Chariya, Secretary General of the Moroccan Free Party, criticized the performance, stating that the lyrics were unacceptable for an artistic event in Tetouan and suggested they insulted the women of the city by promoting content that encourages corruption. Critics on social media argued the lyrics disparage the institution of marriage, a sensitive topic amidst rising trends of marriage avoidance among Moroccan youth.

In response, Ghaith clarified via Instagram that the lyrics are rooted in Moroccan folk heritage and the ‘Aita’ musical genre. She explained that the phrase does not aim to devalue marriage, but rather expresses a preference for a life of joy and dignity over a marriage characterized by misery and oppression. She emphasized that the term ‘Zahou’ signifies joy and pride within the cultural context of the song.
