Karin Prien proposes tax on AI-driven value creation
German Federal Family Minister Karin Prien has called for a targeted tax on economic value generated primarily through artificial intelligence. Prien argues that taxing these revenues is necessary to manage technological shifts and ensure that the benefits of progress are not limited to a few actors.
The proposed tax revenue would be earmarked for specific purposes, including education and investments to improve future opportunities for children and youth, such as affordable housing. Prien also advocated for structural reforms to increase state efficiency and reduce welfare spending to maintain economic sustainability.
The proposal has sparked debate within the German coalition. While Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger previously suggested taxing high AI revenues to fund labor market transitions, he later suggested prioritizing economic growth before implementing such taxes. Similarly, Economy Minister Katherina Reiche expressed a preference for implementing AI technology before addressing taxation. Meanwhile, CDU leader Friedrich Merz has maintained a critical stance on the matter, though the SPD has expressed openness to the fair taxation of AI profits.
