Karin Prien reconsidering German parental allowance cuts

German Family Minister Karin Prien (CDU) has signaled a potential reversal regarding planned cuts to parental allowance (Elterngeld). Following summer debates and political shifts, Prien stated she is “open” to maintaining the current 14-month benefit duration instead of the proposed reduction to 12 months. The coalition is currently reviewing various models to balance budget constraints with the needs of families.

In addition to the Elterngeld review, Prien announced plans to present a concept for a new family care allowance (Familienpflegegeld) in the first half of 2027. This proposed wage replacement benefit would support individuals who temporarily leave the workforce to care for relatives at home. Prien argued that such financial support could prevent caregivers from falling into permanent part-time employment traps and provide long-term economic benefits.

The minister also expressed frustration with current fiscal priorities, specifically criticizing the allocation of funds for fuel discounts while her ministry faces strict savings mandates.
