Karina Ribeiro recovers from pulmonary embolism after short flight

Karina Ribeiro, a 47‑year‑old social worker from Brasília, developed a pulmonary embolism after a two‑hour flight that took her from Brasília to São Paulo and then to Florianópolis. Ten days before the trip she noticed mild swelling in her left leg, which she did not deem serious. On the third day after arriving in Florianópolis, climbing hotel stairs triggered sudden shortness of breath and chest pain. She was taken back to Brasília, where doctors found her oxygen saturation low and suspected a pulmonary embolism.

She was admitted to Hospital Brasília Águas Claras, spent five days in the intensive care unit and two days on a regular ward. Treatment included a minimally invasive catheter‑directed therapy that delivered medication directly to the clot, followed by anticoagulant therapy. Cardiologists Anny Gutemberg and Eduardo Lima explained the urgency of early recognition and described Virchow’s triad as the underlying mechanism for clot formation. Ribeiro reported a 98 % recovery and said she now values time with her family.
