Karitsa mosquito spraying scheduled to prevent West Nile virus

The Municipality of Dion-Olympus has announced emergency mosquito control measures in the community of Karitsa to protect public health and prevent the spread of West Nile virus.

Scheduled for Tuesday, September 1, 2026, the spraying operations will take place within and around the settlement, targeting drains and areas with stagnant water. The applications, conducted by a contractor for the Central Macedonia Region, are set to occur during the night between 22:30 and 00:30 to minimize public exposure.

Residents are advised to stay off the streets during these hours and keep pets and livestock indoors. Authorities recommend closing doors and windows and using air conditioning or fans to keep interiors cool. Special care should be taken to protect individuals with health issues. The insecticide used is authorized by the Ministry of Rural Development and Food and is designed to break down in sunlight and avoid harming beneficial insects when applied at night.
