Karkonosze National Park implements conservation and infrastructure upgrades
Karkonosze National Park is undertaking significant measures to combat environmental degradation caused by record-breaking tourism. With over 2.6 million visitors annually, the area has faced severe soil erosion and damage to vegetation from tourists straying from designated paths.
In response, a partnership between the Karkonosze National Park, Grupa Żabka, and UNEP/GRID-Warszawa has renovated 4.5 km of trails. The project includes the installation of walkways and drainage systems to protect peatlands and wetlands. Educational efforts have also been expanded through 27 new information boards and the distribution of 6,000 free maps, including versions for the visually impaired.
Additionally, the historic Odrodzenie facility, operating since 1928, has officially attained mountain shelter status. Following a modernization process to meet contemporary fire safety standards—including new alarm systems, emergency lighting, and smoke control installations—the site has been formally categorized as a shelter after meeting all regulatory requirements.
