Karl-Anthony Towns and New York Knicks contract talks stall
Contract negotiations between the New York Knicks and star center Karl-Anthony Towns have reached a standstill. While Towns is eligible for a maximum four-year extension worth approximately $276 million, reports indicate that the two sides are significantly far apart in their financial expectations.
To maintain roster flexibility and avoid exceeding the NBA’s second apron, the Knicks are reportedly seeking a deal in the range of $45 million to $50 million annually. This approach aligns with owner James Dolan’s stance on managing the team’s salary cap. Towns, who is coming off a season where he helped lead the Knicks to their first championship in 53 years, currently has a $57 million salary for the upcoming season and a $61 million player option for the 2027-28 campaign.
Analysts suggest that if an agreement is not reached, Towns could become a highly sought-after free agent in the future. The impasse comes as the Knicks prepare for training camp, with the organization also managing the future financial commitments of other key players like Jalen Brunson, OG Anunoby, and Josh Hart.
