Karl-Anthony Towns and New York Knicks contract talks stall
Contract extension negotiations between the New York Knicks and center Karl-Anthony Towns have stalled as the team approaches training camp. Despite mutual interest and discussions throughout the offseason, an agreement is considered unlikely in the short term.
Towns, a six-time All-Star who played a key role in the Knicks' recent NBA championship, is eligible for a maximum extension worth approximately $273 million over four years. He is currently set to earn $57 million this season and holds a $61 million player option for the 2027-28 campaign. If no deal is reached, he could become an unrestricted free agent in 2028.
A primary obstacle in the negotiations is the NBA's financial regulations. Knicks owner James Dolan has stated the organization does not intend to exceed the league's second luxury-tax apron, a threshold that carries severe roster-building restrictions. Reports suggest the Knicks would prefer Towns to accept a contract below the maximum to maintain financial flexibility, especially as the team faces other upcoming contract decisions for players like Josh Hart, Jalen Brunson, and OG Anunoby.
