Karl-Eduard von Schnitzler: The face of East German propaganda

Karl-Eduard von Schnitzler, the prominent East German television agitator, is remembered on the 25th anniversary of his death. Schnitzler was best known for hosting ‘Der Schwarze Kanal’, a propaganda program that aired for nearly three decades starting in March 1960.

Through his sharp-tongued commentary, Schnitzler targeted West Germany and the CDU/CSU federal government. While his program aimed to align East German viewers with state ideology, many citizens reportedly chose to switch to Western television instead.

Born in 1918 to a wealthy Cologne banking family, Schnitzler had a complex background. He joined the Communist Party in 1937 and later served as an editor for a BBC program aimed at German prisoners of war during World War II. He died on September 20, 2001.
