Karl Finatzer, South Tyrolean freedom fighter, dies at 101

Karl Finatzer, a former freedom fighter and co-founder of the Neumarkt Schützenkompanie, has passed away at the age of 101 in Gmünd, Carinthia. The Südtiroler Heimatbund (SHB) announced his death, noting his historical role in resisting fascist oppression in South Tyrol.

Finatzer’s life was marked by his struggle against Italianization policies. As a child, he faced discrimination and physical abuse for speaking German. He famously discarded his mandatory fascist ‘Balilla’ youth uniform in a chicken coop, which led to his expulsion from school. Following World War II, he participated in nocturnal actions to hoist Tyrolean flags to protest continued fascist policies.

Due to his activism, Finatzer was forced to flee to Austria in 1960 to avoid prosecution for ‘political conspiracy.’ He did not return to South Tyrol for ten years due to safety concerns, which prevented him from managing his family’s carpentry business or attending his parents' funeral. He was buried in Gmünd on August 3, 2026.
