Karl Rove discusses political threats and 2028 GOP prospects

Republican strategist Karl Rove addressed his standing within the GOP and recent personal security concerns during the Texas Tribune Festival. Rove revealed that he received “credible threats” after announcing his intention to vote for Democratic candidate John Rosenthal for the Texas Railroad Commission, marking his first vote for a Democrat in 30 years. The threats resulted in the Texas Department of Public Safety stationing an officer outside his residence for one week.

During the event, Rove also commented on the future of the Republican Party, specifically regarding Vice President JD Vance. He stated that it would be a “mistake” for the party to nominate Vance for the 2028 presidential election without an open primary, noting that historically, only two presidents have successfully won after endorsing their vice president.

Rove further defended himself against labels such as “RINO” (Republican In Name Only), citing his history of fundraising and voter registration efforts as evidence of his commitment to the party.
