Karlshorst Residents Call for Tiny Forests to Halt Over‑building

Berlin district officials and local residents are debating new housing plans in Karlshorst. Residents argue that additional buildings between existing blocks would reduce green space, worsen air circulation, increase ground temperature and remove shade, especially during heat waves. At a public meeting on the Odesaplatz, a 75‑year‑old resident urged the district council to require small, densely planted tree groups—so‑called “tiny forests”—in areas slated for new development. He said, “I have nothing against building, but I have something against over‑densification.” Green‑party councilor Filiz Keküllüoğlu, responsible for transport, green spaces and environmental protection in Lichtenberg, pledged to consider measures that protect existing trees, improve pedestrian routes and address traffic congestion.

The discussion reflects broader concerns in the district about insufficient trees, too many cars, poorly placed vehicles, unsafe crossings and new traffic rules. Advocates fear that without early action, summer heat will become increasingly dangerous for older residents.
